Over the past decade, Martens has carried out geotechnical investigations for development or upgrade of over 300 telecommunication towers/monopoles throughout NSW and ACT
Investigations included:
- Drilling of boreholes using our in-house 4WD truck-mounted drill rig, including NMLC rock coring when rock was encountered within target investigation depth
- In-situ soil resistivity testing using an AEMC 4620 Ground Resistance Tester and adopting the Wenner 4 pin method
- Foundation depths assessment using a Vallon Gradiometer Magnetometer ferrous locator
Prevailing obstacles overcome by the project team included:
- Short project turnaround times, necessitating exceptional project management
- Risks associated with long travel distances, requiring fatigue management
- Risks associated with frequenting isolated rural areas, managed through predetermined communication protocols
- Challenging topography such as steep terrain in mountainous areas
- Challenging subsurface conditions such as soft soils, very high strength rock, gilgai
